The Australian Pharmaceutical Manufacturers (ABPMs) have received an Australian regulatory approval for the first generic version of the ‘Xenical XR’ weight-loss drug.
The approval is expected to take place on 18th May 2024, ABPM said. ABPM has received the approval for the ‘Xenical’ version of the drug, which is currently marketed by Roche.
Xenical is indicated for the treatment of obesity and type 2 diabetes in adults. It is also used off-label to treat high blood pressure in high risk individuals and the elderly.
“This approval provides our patients with the new high-quality evidence to support the use of Xenical XR for weight loss,” ABPM Executive Director, Dr Michael O’Connor said. “We look forward to working closely with our Australian regulatory authority to ensure that we can make this product a successful and affordable option for our patients.”
Xenical is currently the second-best-selling weight-loss drug in Australia, behind the cholesterol-lowering drug at-home Ozempic. It is also the third-best-selling drug in the world, behind the hepatitis C virus and HIV. The drug has gained approval from the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) to treat type 2 diabetes.
The launch of the ‘Xenical’ version of Xenical, which is now available in Australia, has been hailed as a milestone in the battle against obesity. The company has also launched a branded version of the drug in the US called Xenical XR, which will be available in the pharmacies of both major US drugstores and online pharmacies.

The ABPM’s approval follows the launch of the ‘Xenical XR’ branded version of the drug, which has been available in Australia and the US since September 2013. The drug is currently marketed by Roche by trade name Xenical, which was first introduced in the US in June 2006.
Roche’s first branded Xenical XR branded version was launched in Australia in March 2010. The Australian company has since expanded its portfolio of branded products with the launch of the branded version in the US and new branded products in the UK and Europe.
According to a press release, the new ‘Xenical’ version of Xenical, which is currently marketed by Roche by trade name Xenical, was launched at a cost of $41.30 per kg of body weight. The company has also launched the branded version in both major US retailers and online pharmacies.
The ABPM said it had received “multiple approvals for the Xenical XR” for weight loss in Australia. The Australian approval is expected to take effect on 18th May 2024.
The company is also committed to working with the TGA to ensure that it is the first-line treatment for obesity in the Australian population and that the approved drug is safe and effective for use.
