The Australian Pharmaceutical Manufacturers (ABPMs) have received an Australian regulatory approval for the first generic version of the ‘Xenical XR’ weight-loss drug.

The approval is expected to take place on 18th May 2024, ABPM said. ABPM has received the approval for the ‘Xenical’ version of the drug, which is currently marketed by Roche.

Xenical is indicated for the treatment of obesity and type 2 diabetes in adults. It is also used off-label to treat high blood pressure in high risk individuals and the elderly.

“This approval provides our patients with the new high-quality evidence to support the use of Xenical XR for weight loss,” ABPM Executive Director, Dr Michael O’Connor said. “We look forward to working closely with our Australian regulatory authority to ensure that we can make this product a successful and affordable option for our patients.”

Xenical is currently the second-best-selling weight-loss drug in Australia, behind the cholesterol-lowering drug at-home Ozempic. It is also the third-best-selling drug in the world, behind the hepatitis C virus and HIV. The drug has gained approval from the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) to treat type 2 diabetes.

The launch of the ‘Xenical’ version of Xenical, which is now available in Australia, has been hailed as a milestone in the battle against obesity. The company has also launched a branded version of the drug in the US called Xenical XR, which will be available in the pharmacies of both major US drugstores and online pharmacies.

“We are very proud to be a trusted supplier of Xenical XR and are excited to be a part of the ABPM’s commitment to bringing weight loss to Australian consumers,” said ABPM President, Mr Jim Campbell. “We have a growing number of Australians looking for effective and affordable weight loss medicines, so we are proud to be a part of this effort, as we work together to deliver a world-class product for consumers in the form of Xenical.”

Xenical XR, which is now available in the Australian market, was developed by Roche to provide individuals with a convenient and affordable weight loss tool to help them lose weight. The drug is now available to purchase in a range of Australian pharmacies, including Boots, Costco and Walmart, and can be purchased at many retailers including Costco Super Markets and Walmart Pharmacy.

“This approval provides our patients with the new high quality evidence to support the use of Xenical XR for weight loss,” said ABPM President, Dr O’Connor. “We look forward to working with our Australian regulatory authority to ensure that we can make this product a successful and affordable option for our patients.”

The ABPM’s approval follows the launch of the ‘Xenical XR’ branded version of the drug, which has been available in Australia and the US since September 2013. The drug is currently marketed by Roche by trade name Xenical, which was first introduced in the US in June 2006.

Roche’s first branded Xenical XR branded version was launched in Australia in March 2010. The Australian company has since expanded its portfolio of branded products with the launch of the branded version in the US and new branded products in the UK and Europe.

According to a press release, the new ‘Xenical’ version of Xenical, which is currently marketed by Roche by trade name Xenical, was launched at a cost of $41.30 per kg of body weight. The company has also launched the branded version in both major US retailers and online pharmacies.

The ABPM said it had received “multiple approvals for the Xenical XR” for weight loss in Australia. The Australian approval is expected to take effect on 18th May 2024.

The company is also committed to working with the TGA to ensure that it is the first-line treatment for obesity in the Australian population and that the approved drug is safe and effective for use.

The ABPM’s approval is expected to take effect on 18th May 2024 in Australia, and will include a second branded version of the drug, which will be available in the Australian market in both branded and generic forms in December 2024.

You can buy Orlistat (Xenical/Alli) as an over-the-counter alternative to Wegovy in the UK.

However, Orlistat is a very different type of weight-loss medication, and research suggests it’s not as effective as Wegovy in supporting weight loss.

What’s the difference between Orlistat and Wegovy?

Wegovy and Orlistat are weight-loss medications approved for use in the UK. However, they are different medications with distinct dosing schedules, costs, and mechanisms of action on the body.

Orlistat is a lipase inhibitor. Lipases are gut enzymes that break down fat from food, enabling the gut to transport fat into the body to be burnt for energy or stored in our fat cells for later use.

Orlistat blocks lipases, preventing some of the dietary fat from our meals from being digested. This leads to fewer calories being absorbed, which can support weight loss.

Orlistat is a prescription medication produced by two pharmaceutical companies in the UK:

  • GlaxoSmithKline: Alli, 60 mg and available over the counter (no prescription)
  • Roche: Xenical, 120 mg and available with a prescription

Wegovy is a weight-loss jab manufactured by Novo Nordisk. It’s a weekly weight-loss injection with semaglutide as the active ingredient.

Semaglutide is a that helps reduce hunger and appetite, allowing you to eat fewer calories, lose weight, and manage your blood sugar levels.

Wegovy is approved in the UK for individuals living with obesity to help them eat fewer calories and lose weight.

How much do Wegovy and Orlistat cost?

The over-the-counter version of Orlistat will cost around £18 a month, so it’s a very affordable medication.

In comparison, buying Wegovy and the injectable pens required for four weeks from Second Nature will cost £229 a month, rising to £299.

Should I try Orlistat or Wegovy for weight loss?

Orlistat is an affordable medication that is generally well-tolerated. However, it’s less effective than Wegovy. Wegovy is twice as effective as Orlistat for weight loss after one year.

So, if you’re looking for the most affordable weight-loss pill you can purchase over the counter, then Orlistat could be an option.

However, if you have a higher budget and are looking for the most effective weight-loss injection in the UK, semaglutide is a better choice.

Wegovy’s not a magic pill

Semaglutide is designed as an additional tool for weight management and, in most cases, shouldn’t be considered a lifelong medication.

Instead, it should be used to help you kickstart your weight loss and healthy journey while you commit to living a healthier lifestyle.

Ideally, we’d be able to lose weight without medication and lifestyle changes would be enough to support weight loss in the long term.

We’d generally recommend trying Second Nature’s before considering a weight-loss jab.

Changing your habits is the most sustainable way to achieve long-term weight loss, and it’s also less expensive.

At Second Nature, we’ve been trusted by the NHS since 2017 to support people with type 2 diabetes and obesity to lose weight, manage their blood sugar levels, and lead healthier lifestyles for the long term.

In 2022, the NHS in the BMJ that compared the weight loss outcomes of five providers in the National Diabetes Prevention Programme.

Second Nature was more than twice as effective at supporting weight loss than the other four providers.

However, if you’ve decided to try semaglutide (when it’s available) but need support in making positive changes to your lifestyle, Second Nature could be an option for you. But it’s worth noting that we have strict eligibility criteria.

Second Nature has a team-based pricing programme, which means they match providers’ recommendations to help you be covered for 60 mg of semaglutide, or 120 mg of Wegovy, once you’ve had your first injection.
